What do I do if I need to see a specialist?
If you feel your condition requires help from someone other than your primary care doctor, you need to schedule an appointment with your primary care doctor first, and he or she will refer you to the proper specialist.
How long will my authorization take?
Optum Care Network believes your primary care doctor knows what’s best for you; therefore, authorizations for most routine specialists are automatically approved. For those that require additional review, authorizations can take up to 10 business days.
How will I know when my authorization has been approved?
For authorizations that have been automatically approved, your primary care doctor will give you a copy before you leave their office, and you’ll be free to schedule your appointment immediately. For authorizations that require additional review, a copy will be mailed to your home, so be sure Optum Care Network always has your correct mailing information.
